Description of Tae Bo

Many people practice martial arts for various reasons such as self-defense, discipline, adrenaline rush or physical fitness. Perhaps it is the last reason why martial arts was able to influence the development of a fitness program such as Tae Bo. Tae Bo is an aerobic cardio-boxing exercise program derived from two martial arts namely Taekwondo and Boxing, thus the name. It was developed by Billy Blanks, a Taekwondo practitoner in 1976. It first began as a workout regimen that incorporated rapid-paced moves from boxing, taekwondo and dance. While it incorporates punches and kicks, Tae Bo is not meant for any kind of fighting but is intended to increase fitness through high-intensity work-out.

Tae Bo is mainly popular for its good cardiovascular benefits. Not only does Tae Bo hone one's physical fitness, it also, to an extent, focuses on the mind and self-image. Tae Bo's rapid movements is set in a certain pattern or rhythm, thus improving one's balance, flexibility and coordination. It also takes the Taekwondo aspect of self-awareness and self-confidence and may be able to relieve a person from depression and anxiety, leading to positive mental health. Aside from accuracy, speed and agility, mind and body coordination is also focused on by Tae Bo. According to Blanks, Tae Bo can subconsciously give a person a certain level of skill and confidence should they come across potential trouble.
