Okinawan Kenpo Origins
Kenpo is the Japanese translation for the Chinese term Chuan Fa, which is used to generally refer to martial arts. The term "Okinawan Kenpo" dates back to the early 1900's when it was used as an umbrella term for all Okinawan Karate. It was only used to refer to a particular karate system in the early 1950's by Shigeru Nakamura who combined katas from Shuri-te and Naha-te. He established his own dojo in 1953 and formed the Okniawa Kenpo Renmei in 1955 with Zenryo Shimabuku.
