Description of Jousting

MALP

Jousting is a martial game held during the Middle Ages wherein two knights are mounted on horses and fight each other using lances whose main purpose is to be used to force the opponent off from his horse while both combatants ride towards each other at high speed. Jousting is usually held in tournaments along with other martial games. Jousts in the Medieval ages were rooted from concepts of heavy cavalry, which was, until the 14th century part of actual warfare. During this time, combatants would wear a chainmail, a solid heavy helmet and a shield. As time went by, knights began to wear full suits of plate armour (harness). In the 15th century, however, jousting became a sport that is no longer related to warfare. Specialized jousting armor became heavier and would weigh as much as 50kg. The movement of the wearer was not an issue, as the game was played in a manner wherein the combatant does not move. The weight of an armor is only limited by what the horse could carry. By and by, armor became heavier and changed in form in such a way that it appeared to be integrated into the horse armour. It was by no means a functional suit of armor, as its main purpose was to withstand the impact of the enemy's lance. For example, the heavy helmet is designed to withstand the impact of a lance to the helmet shuld the opponent aim to detach the crest on the fighter's helmet. It was in 1559 that jousting met its end as a sport after King Henry II died of wounds he suffered from a jousting tournament.
