One of the great elements of martial arts training is tradition. Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, European, African. Many martial arts practiced today come directly from historic cultures that depended on these fighting styles for their survival. Part of what gives the arts their prestige is where they came from and how they we used to battle enemies and defend loved ones and livelihoods.

What are your thoughts on how the arts have changed (any martial art) upon being introduced to modern America? Has it lost prestige? Gained new aspects?

Take it, change it, "throw out what doesn't work" without practicing it long enough to understand it, promote yourself to 10th degree with a great title & sparkling uniform & matching belt. Get all your buddies to do the same & create a circle of complementary grandpoobah-ships & such...

That's the American way. Too few actually maintain the proper traditions we were given to learn & be entrusted with.
